Heavy Metals Testing

Heavy metals are toxic elements that can accumulate in cannabis plants from contaminated soil, water, or fertilizers. These metals pose serious health risks because they bioaccumulate in the body over time, causing neurological damage, organ toxicity, and developmental problems.

Elements We Analyze

Our laboratory tests for four heavy metals of primary concern in cannabis products:

  • Arsenic: Carcinogen linked to cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurological effects
  • Cadmium: Accumulates in kidneys and bones; causes organ damage and is classified as a carcinogen
  • Lead: Neurotoxin particularly harmful to children; no safe level of exposure exists
  • Mercury: Damages the nervous system, kidneys, and developing fetuses

Different Limits by Product Type

Minnesota establishes stricter limits for inhalable products compared to edibles, reflecting the increased bioavailability and health risks associated with inhaled contaminants. Our testing uses inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to detect these elements at extremely low concentrations.

    Special Consideration for Vape Products

Vaporizer hardware components may leach heavy metals into cannabis oil during use. Finished vape products should be tested for heavy metals even if the concentrate itself passed testing.
