Homogeneity Testing

Homogeneity testing ensures that cannabinoids are uniformly distributed throughout manufactured products with serving units. Consistent dosing is critical for consumer safety. This is particularly important in edible products, where uneven distribution could lead to unexpectedly strong or weak effects.

When Homogeneity Testing Is Required

All products with defined serving units must demonstrate homogeneity, including:

  • Edible products (gummies, chocolates, baked goods)
  • Beverages with specified serving sizes
  • Lozenges and dissolvable tablets
  • Transdermal patches
  • Any product where consumers rely on serving size for dosing

Testing Protocol

We randomly select 10 individual serving units from the batch and test each separately. Units are chosen from multiple packages when applicable to ensure representative sampling across the entire production run. For each unit, we measure both the weight and the concentration of the predominant cannabinoid listed on the label.

Pass Criteria

Products pass homogeneity testing when both the weight and cannabinoid concentration of all tested units fall within ±15% of the label claim. This ensures consumers can reliably expect consistent dosing from one serving to the next.

    One-Time Requirement

Homogeneity must be demonstrated on the first batch for each manufacturing process. If your process changes, homogeneity testing must be repeated to verify the new process maintains uniform distribution.

    Testing Must Use Final Packaging

Homogeneity testing must be conducted on products in their final packaged form as sold to consumers. This ensures testing reflects what consumers actually receive.
