Foreign Material Testing

Foreign material inspection identifies physical contaminants and adulterants that compromise product quality and safety. This visual examination detects unwanted substances that other analytical methods cannot identify.

Types of Foreign Matter

Our trained analysts inspect samples for three categories of contamination:

Gross Foreign Matter (Organic)

Plant-based contaminants including hair, insects, other plant materials, natural fibers, and general filth. Products fail if these materials exceed 5% by mass in the analyzed portion.

Hazardous Foreign Matter (Inorganic)

Hard, sharp, or synthetic adulterants including glass, metal, plastics, and other materials that could cause physical injury. Products fail if these materials exceed 1% by mass.

Inspection Protocol

We examine at least 30% of the sample under magnification, dissecting buds to inspect internal and external surfaces. Contamination is quantified by mass, and detailed notes describe any foreign matter identified.
