Stability Testing

Stability testing establishes how long cannabis products maintain their safety and potency under normal storage conditions. This data determines appropriate expiration dates and ensures products don’t degrade or become contaminated before consumers use them.

What We Evaluate

Stability studies monitor products over time for three critical parameters:

  • Microbial safety: Confirming harmful organisms don’t proliferate during storage
  • Cannabinoid potency: Verifying the predominant cannabinoid remains within ±15% of label claim
  • Container leaching: Testing for contaminants that may migrate from packaging (especially heavy metals in vape cartridges)

Testing Timeline

Products receive an initial six-month expiration date. Manufacturers initiate stability studies within three months of product launch, testing samples at designated time points to establish evidence-based expiration dates. Samples are stored in final packaging under the conditions specified on the label (or room temperature if unspecified).

Stability Requirements

At each time point, the product must maintain microbial safety standards and cannabinoid content within ±15% of the label claim. If stability testing demonstrates longer shelf life, manufacturers can request extended expiration dates based on their data.

    One-Time Requirement Per Process

Stability must be established for the first batch of each product type and manufacturing process. Changes to formulation, packaging, or processing require new stability studies.

    Stability testing provides:

    • Evidence-based expiration dates for regulatory compliance
    • Confidence that products remain safe throughout their shelf life
    • Verification that potency claims remain accurate over time
    • Data to support quality control and product development
